Nokia to make smartphone comeback in 2016

New Nokia products will "blow people away", claims former exec

Nokia is gearing up to launch a new range of smartphones next year, according to re/code.

Citing "two sources briefed on Nokia's plans", re/code reportsNokia Technologies, the smallest business unit left in the company unit after Microsoft bought the Finnish company's devices and services business in 2014, will be leading the charge back into the mobile phone arena.

As part of the agreement with Microsoft, Nokia was prevented from producing any mobile devices until 31 December this year. However, if this rumour turns out to be true, it would seem the company's wasting no time returning to a market it was once thought to have failed in completely.

The fact the company launched the N1 Android tablet late last year, which raised some eyebrows in light of the acquisition terms, lends plenty of creedence to this latest rumour.

re/code also claims Nokia will also produce virtual reality devices in the future, as well as having other, unnamed "ambitious projects" on the boil.

While this may sound a bit out there, it's also given some validity by comments made by Richard Kerris, who was head of developer relations between 2011 and 2013.

Kerris, who continued to act as a consultant for Nokia after his official departure, told re/code people would be "blown away" if some of the technology in development came to market.

If you're wondering when you will be able to get your hands on a new Nokia smartphone, we're afraid you could be waiting a while. As with the N1, it's expected the new Nokia devices will launch in China first and then gradually roll out to other markets.

However, Kerris is confident "Nokia is a company that is not going away", so expect to see new smartphones, and perhaps other devices, landing over here too.
